Video File Spec

29.97 fps, square pixel, progressive.  Please refer to the Delivery Template details for deliverable resoultions.

We are offering two codec options for this show: NotchLC & HAP.  Please see below for details on each.

NotchLC

This is a relatively new codec developed to provide a high quality intermediate codec option that is optimized for real-time playback.  It supports up to 10-bit color and has significant improvements in overall color and gradient quality over HAP.

Installation files for the Adobe plugin and Quicktime plugin can be found here.

There are limitations however so please take these details into consideration when planning your workflow:

  • Decode / encode is currently only supported on Windows machines.  Mac / Linux machines will not be able to author or play back NotchLC files.
  • Local playback is currently only only supported in Adobe software or Quicktime Player.

Render times are comparable to HAP and file sizes are slightly larger (dependent on quality settings).

HAP

This is an open source codec that can be downloaded for Mac or PC

Our media playback server is currently compatible with HAP V12.  Please do not use V10.

Adobe users please note:  As of Adobe CC 2018 all Quicktime 7 family codecs have been deprecated, this unfortunately includes HAP.  In order to produce HAP files you will need to do one of the following:

  • Render files to an intermediate codec like Prores and transcode to HAP in a different encoder (such as an older version of Adobe, FFMPEG, or encoder of your choice)
  • Purchase and install the AfterCodecs plugin which can provide HAP encoding in After Effects, Premiere Pro, or Media Encoder.

Special Notes:

  • No front pad or 2 Pop, 1st frame is the start of video file
  • Please keep audio and video deliveries the same length
  • Please embed video delivery file with stereo reference track
  • In addition to full-resolution delivery please include a quarter-resolution file with embedded reference audio folowing the Preview file spec below.

 

Still Images:

  • 1-frame video files following the above video file spec.

 

Preview / Previz:

  • h.264 or ProRes
  • For delivery templates lower resolution proxies are acceptable as long as they maintain the template aspect ratio.  We recommend half-res for proxies / placeholders in delivery template configuration.

Audio File Spec to Post Audio

All audio will be balanced for the room by a post audio facility.  Please see spec document here for complete information and reach out with any questions.

Audio preview video files should be encoded using DNxHD36 in a Quicktime container.  In Adobe Media Encoder this will be DNxHD LB 8-bit.  This codec has a resolution limit of 1920 x 1080 so you may need to scale your content down to fit, but Adobe Media Encoder will do this automatically.

 

Final Deliverable Checklist

  • Full video (full resolution HAP or NotchLC in delivery template format with stereo reference audio)

  • Preview video (DNxHD36 codec version of the full video delivery including stereo reference audio and an LTC burn-in at the upper right of the frame.  LTC should start at 00;00;00;00)

  • Still frame placeholder (full resolution PNG still that is representative of the asset)

  • Audio files as specified by post audio (if applicable)

  • Hold Slate (If applicable.  Should be delivered to standard show content spec with 44.1 kHz 16-bit uncompressed embedded stereo audio)
